KROMA Mini class - some questions

Postby D.DJ » Mon Apr 12, 2010 8:05 pm

OK, as the name suggests, I have a few questions about the Mini clas here at Keilor.
I bought a Mini M03 from eBay, comes with 2 shells and a bunch of wheels, but needs a speedy and "control stick" (I assume that means a controller, which I have)
He says that he will supply it with a Johnson motor.
So my questions are:
1- Do I need to get a better motor, leave that one in it, or get one so I can compete with you all?
2- For the speedy issue, do I need to get a new receiver AND speedy or do some come with a built-in speedy or receiver?
I'll have more questions this Sunday if I do receive it by the end of the week.

1. The Johnson motor is the Motor for 540Pro.

The regulation motor/Speed control for the Mini class is this:
http://www.hobbywing.com/english/Articl ... icleID=426
Specifically the EZrun 13T,3000Kv motor and 35A Speedy. They are usually sold as a set by Hobbywing and its dealers so there are no matching hassles.

It's essentially the cheapest bang for buck brushless system available and gives the Minis a control motor across the board.

The Johnson 40motor is too slow in a Mini to keep up with the Minis with the Ezrun system.

2. The Speed control plugs into your standard receiver, replacing the throttle servo of a nitro car. There's no need for another 'special' receiver or other wise.

Sweet! Thanks Lionel.

So now all I have to do is get a new receiver, the motor+esc combo and learn to drive it!

Can anyone tell me where the closest place is to get parts for it? It's missing 2 screws that hold one of the front steering arms. Apart from that, it has 4 sets of wheels (not sure what type they are) along with whats on the car ATM. Also, Im not sure how to keep the battery in place - it doesnt have anything (as far as I can see) that will hold it in the slot. Oooh, and gears! As far as I can see, the drivetrain is complete, but there is no spur/pinion gear that goes onto the motor, so what type of gear would I need to get?

I'll just bring it down on Sunday for everyone to gawk at and then Ill get a list of the things Ill need to get it running!

Just bring it on sunday, the Mini specialists like Lance and JD and Brad and Phil and errm... just about all of them, will know what goes where. They might even have a bunch of spares for it. The guys have their Mini setups down pat.

Mini driving is actually alot harder to master than it looks!

Hahaha, will do!
So far, the shopping list is:
New receiver: $30 ish
Screws: a few bucks?
Motor+ESC: $82 including postage.
Possibly a new battery - I have a 7.2V 3600mAH NiMH stick I can use for now, might go to LiPo but then I have to get a LiPo charger, but Ill definitely get it once I find a LiPo to fit into my RRR!

Does anybody know what LiPo will be able to fit into it? Im guessing it has to be no more than 85mm long, 21mm wide and no more than 16mm thick.
I did buy one, but got refunded because the stupid Hong Kong post never let it through, twice!!
Actually, since I wrote all that out, I won't delete it, but Ive actually found a good one that better fit into my RRR, so ignore what was said before, even though you've probably already read it :)

So know I have everything I need (I hope), now all I have to do is go and get it! well, wait for it to arrive at my door!

for the m-chassis site, is it your site? If it is, would I be able to buy parts from you this Sunday?
I've bought the motor/esc and receiver, so it should be ready by the next meet (not this coming one)
Im after the screws #50882 and shafts #9805503
They're the only things im missing apart from something to hold the battery in place, but I can devise something to fix that (not a rubber band like I had last time!!)
All ill probably be asking is about tyre choice and if you can tell what tyres that I have.
Thanks for all your help guys, I hope to kick Phil's rear-end on Sunday! (sorry Philly boy) Had lot's of practise and the car seems to be where I'd like it to be, as far as I'm concerned, just gotta put new pinion gears onto the clutchbell (the 16t one i had was f&^%d up, dont ask how!) and then put it all back together!

How come you won't bring it? Do you want more time to setup the 4wd mini or the RRR wont be quite complete by then? How come you had to rebuild it? Did you smash it or is it just apart for some cleaning?

I don't think there is one sentence in there that isnt a question!

Hmm I actually do need a new middle long belt, wouldnt mind getting the aluminium pulleys so they dont wear out but I cant find them all.
Well, Im getting the parts I need from Tim, and ive got the other parts coming in from overseas (Hong Kong most likely, US for the receivers [one for the mini and one for my drag car i have going on]) so the mini will be up for some fighting by the next round.

Also, instead of asking on Sunday, where is the nearest track either from Keilor or Craigieburn that has decent nitro competitors and maybe the Mini class as well? I know Templestowe is a good track as far as Ive heard but they dont run nitro's there.

lilydale for nitro, probably the place to go for just nitro

dandenong i think may run both, not may clubs run nitro anymore, mainly gone electric.

Excellent! I'm 90% sure that I'm up to face Phil and give him a run for his money! With the nitro's, that is.
I had a great run today, even though I was really only competing against one other person (Stephen Hutchinson I think, has an NT1 with RB V12)
I was able to lap him during the races, but he did have a bad setup which made his car pretty wonky! I had two rounds where was too rich, one round saw me dry up 30 seconds before the finish!!

So, as I was going to say, we need more nitro tourers to turn up. I'm always there so the competition is ready to go. If I turn out to really woop Phil's butt (fingers crossed) :D then I need some people to compete with! Hopefully JD will have his NT1 up and ready to go next session. Sounds like it has some real balls!

For those that were there today, how good was the last round for the minis? They were all over the place especially when they decided to start attacking each other! Ive never seen so many cars flip in one race and still be intact!

nice nice, im actually trying to see if using a little less toe-in in the rear will still keep my traction but lessen the wear in the rear. I went today but the track was covered in dust and some smart nobs decided to do burnouts at the back straight carpark and cover the track with rocks!! Bunch of rocks, but replace the R with a C, if you ask me.

The trouble is that you'll see all sorts of characters in the area occasionally. Once I was out there practicing, and some other chaps thought nothing of interrupting my laps by driving their RC nitros up and down the start/finish straight. It appears that they only knew how to drive their cars in a straight line and were allergic to corners.
