V2 Spring & Brush Replacement
by Curtis Schlacht from DC Motorsports

As the V2 motor is new to most races the simple task of replacing springs and brushes can become tedious and frustrating without proper instructions. The guidelines below are intended to help familiarize you with the procedure we used for installing and removing V2 brushes & spring.

Brush Installation:
The installation of new brushes takes place from the inside of the endbell, which is opposite the procedure of many other brands of motors you’ve been accustomed to using.

1) Insert the brush shunt through the eye of the spring pushing the shunt until it becomes exposed at the other end of the brush tube. (pic #1, pic #2)

2) Grasp the exposed shunt (pic # 2) with your index and thumb fingers & gently pull the brush in the brush tube. During this step you will want to position the brush so it’s in the correct orientation to the commutator.

3) Now with 100% of the brush inside the brush tube use your index finger of your opposing hand and place it at the end of the brush tube and release your grasp on the shunt.

4) Now take note of the two slots at the end of the brush tube (pic # 3), these slot are intended to hold the brush shunt and keep the brush suspended while the final motors assembly takes place.

5) While grasping the brush shunt gently pull just hard enough to remove any slack that has formed in the shunt (I recommend not to pull the brush away from your finger, as the friction from you finger against the brush will keep the brush from twisting during this next step). Now in one continues motion fold the shunt into one of the two slots on the brush tube and wrap the excess shunt around the radius of the brush tube (pic # 4).

6) Now, let go of the shunt & remove your finger from the inside of the endbell. If proper installation has been achieved the brush will now be sitting flush with the end of the brush tube in the proper orientation to the
commutator (pic # 5).

Spring Removal & Installation:

Removal:
Spring removal in accomplished by pushing the spring from the outside to inside the endbell.

1) Using the tip of an allen wrench/driver apply pressure to the last coil of the exposed spring. As even pressure is applied, steadily work the spring from side to side working the spring to the bottom of the brush tube (pic # 6)…

2) Take care to never pull the spring out with a pair of pliers, as this will stretch and deform the spring’s coils…

Installation:
Spring installation is completed outside the endbell by inserting the spring into the brush tube.

1) Starting with the smallest end of the spring, insert the spring into the brush tube pushing it in as far as it will go. Sometimes twisting/threading the spring will allow for further penetration (pic # 7).

2) Using the backside of an exacto knife blade, align the blade with the cutouts on the brush tube (pic # 8) and push down on the exposed coils. With some resistance the spring will pop into place. (pic # 9)
